"The Favourite" Review: Sleeping in English History

In a movie week enriched by “Roma” and “Shoplifters,” both masterpieces, “The Favourite,” which was directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, comes as comic relief of a high order. The comedy is elegant, frequently dark and genuinely witty. The spectacle is gorgeous. The revisionism is gleeful—this is early 18th- century English history served sizzling hot.
