Moyer gets 7 to 15 years in prison for texting and driving killing two people near Monroe

Image
MONROE, Mich. (WSYM) - The courtroom in Monroe was filled with people and with emotions.   Todd Moyer had been found guilty of 2 counts of Reckless Driving Causing Death.   Judge Michael Weipert sentenced Moyer to 7 to 15 years in prison as punishment, but also to send a message to everyone that texting and driving is “an evil that must be stopped.”  Moyer was driving on U.S. 23 near Monroe on July 14, 2017, going 78 miles an hour when he slammed into a car without braking, killing 35-year-old Gladys Johnson and her 5-year-old daughter Za’Kira.   The evidence is he had been searching strip clubs in Ohio and texting.  Moyer texted a friend, "just got into an accident."   The friend replied, "Seriously?"  Moyer texted back, "OMG I’m f-ed 2 people killed." The friend replied, "not funny fake news."  Moyer texted, "bro I swear, I’m going to jail." Gloria Johnson is Gladys’s mother.  She talked with 7 Action News last summer.   Gloria passed

Stree Movie Review: Rajkummar-Shraddha"s Funny Ghost Story Has Something for Everyone

Image
Director:  Amar Kaushik Cast:  Shraddha Kapoor, Rajkummar Rao, Pankaj Tripathi Making a film that could make people laugh throughout is no easy task. Doing it through a setup and plot which honestly most people in today’s time would not relate to, is even tougher. Still, Amar Kaushik’s directorial debut Stree is incredibly funny. But the good part doesn"t end here. Stree is extremely self-aware of how ridiculous and illogical it gets in various moments. <!-- --> Vicky (Rajkummar Rao) is Chanderi’s Manish Malhotra, who can stitch an entire lehenga in just 31 minutes. He doesn’t need a tape measure to take women’s body measurements. He just needs to see them once for accurate fit when making their clothing pattern. His father (Atul Srivastava) believes Vicky is god-gifted. Soon young, talented Vicky gets distracted from work as he falls head over heels for a mysterious girl (Shraddha Kapoor), who appears only during the four-day puja in the village, and later disappears. Tesco puts up huge Christmas tree in AUGUST - and customers are baffled

Most of us are enjoying the summer holidays - and when we"re off to do our weekly shops, Christmas is the last thing on our minds. Although Santa isn"t coming to town for another FOUR months, staff at a branch of Tesco got into the festive mood by putting up a massive tree - but it was for a surprising reason. The tree didn"t go unnoticed by locals who were baffled when they spotted the festive display - as it"s only August. The massive 25ft tree was put up in the car park of the store yesterday, complete with twinkling fairy lights. Seems a little premature (Image: SWNS- Cambridge) Read More Rob James noticed the out of place tree and took to Twitter to say that he witnessed it getting decorated outside Tesco on Newmarket road. He added: "It’s bonkers! I don’t understand why it was there?" Someone commented: "I went in Card Factory the other day and they had a whole aisle dedicated to Christmas Cards!" Other people lamented the pre

Cast of "Searching" spill details on thriller

Image
You know how when you’ve lost something, it’s always in the last place you look? Turns out that’s true online, too. What a funny phrase. Of course it’s in the last place you look. You’re not going to keep looking after you’ve found it. The new movie “Searching” reminds us that everything you do on the Internet — and we mean everything — is recorded. Deco’s Chris Van Vliet flew to Los Angeles, where he searched for answers with the cast of the movie. John Cho (as David Kim): “I’m calling to report a missing person.” Colin Woodell (as 911 operator): “OK. Who is this regarding?” John Cho (as David Kim): “My daughter.” “Searching” is about a father, played by John Cho, who is searching for his daughter after she goes missing. He retraces all of her steps online looking for any clues as to where she might be, and the entire movie is told in a very unique way using FaceTime, security cameras and computer screens only. Debra Messing: “It literally has never been done before, and so that’s the

Flagging a problem? Switzerland"s new ambassador has funny prop gaffe on first day

Image
They share a border, language and good diplomatic relations — but are things about to go sour between the Germans and the Swiss? Let"s hope a flag gaffe by Switzerland’s new ambassador to Germany isn"t something to go by. Paul Seger was recording a video message to mark his first day in the new post when he was victim of an unexpected prop problem. He was wrapping up a piece to camera about the strength of German-Swiss relations when the flags of both countries — which were fluttering behind Seger as a backdrop — tumbled down in the wind. Seger laughed off the incident, which was published by the official Twitter account of the Swiss embassy in Germany. “On my first day as Swiss ambassador to Germany I made a crashing welcome speech with flying colours,” he later joked. Samoan PM lashes out at "utterly stupid" climate change deniers

Image
Samoan prime minister Tuilaepa Sailele has attacked climate change deniers as "utterly stupid", urging Australia to cut its carbon emissions. Mr Sailele, speaking during a visit to the Lowy Institute, a foreign policy think-tank in Sydney, said climate change was a "disaster" threatening Pacific Island nations.  "We all know the problem, we all know the solutions, and all that is left would be some political courage, some political guts, to tell people of your country there is a certainty of disaster," Mr Sailele told the crowd. "So any leader of any country who believes that there is no climate change, I think he ought to be taken to mental confinement. he is utterly stupid. And I say the same thing to any leader here."  His speech comes as conservative MPs up the pressure on new Australian prime minister Scott Morrison to increase investment in coal and gas and drop the commitment to Paris targets to reduce emissions.  Mr Morrison has also been

"STUPID" Macron under fire after declaring France is "resistant to change"

Image
The young centrist, who was elected on a promise to “transform France” said his economic and social reforms were creating a ‘culture change’. Mr Macron, an unabashed admirer of the Danish economic model that mixes a strong social security and flexible labour laws, made the remarks during an exchange with French expatriates on Wednesday afternoon. He said: “We should not be naïve, what is possible is linked to a culture, to a people who are marked by their history. “These Lutheran [Protestant] people, who have lived through transformations in recent years, are not like the Gauls who are resistant to change,” he said, referring to the ancient tribes that roamed France more than 2,000 years ago. The young centrist, who was once slammed for saying the French “hate reform” and that the country is “unreformable,” also said he had succeeded in bringing about a “cultural change” in France. Mr Macron said: “You will see France transformed by its people. People are changing mindset, they are muc

Laughing at life: Comedian Bill Engvall"s show spins observations on everyday experiences

Image
Engvall is launching a tour this fall that runs through May, bringing his act to between 60 and 70 cities around the U.S., he said. His show in Grand Forks will feature "clean, family-relatable" material, he said. "People like it when you"re clean. We"ll talk about adult subjects, but in a clean way." He draws his comedy sketches from observations of people as well as aspects of his own life. "I have a theory that we all do the same thing, just with a different accent," he said. For example, in his show, he reflects on life now that his kids have grown up and left home. He and his wife, Gail, who live in southern California, have a daughter who"s 32 and son who"s 27. "You can stay up late, sleep in and walk around the house naked," he said. "What"s the down side? I don"t get it." He weaves in his wife"s perspective and what it"s like to be married to a comedian, he said. "It isn"t easy.&

Hilarious royal comedy leads feisty female films at Venice

Image
VENICE (AFP) -  Wicked and powerful women took the Venice film festival by storm Thursday with a viciously funny British period comedy, "The Favourite", already being talked of as an Oscar contender. With controversy raging over why only one female director has been chosen to compete for the Golden Lion top prize, films by or about women are the talk of the festival. "The Favourite", a riotous cocktail of love, power and ambition at the court of Queen Anne starring Emma Stone, Rachel Weisz and Olivia Colman, drew belly laughs and cheers at its premiere. Critics predicted Oscar nominations for the trio, who play the three most powerful women in early 18th-century England. The story of the real-life rivalry between Sarah Churchill, the Duchess of Marlborough, and her cousin Abigail Hill as they fight for the ear of the queen played by Colman, was given a distinctly post-#MeToo twist by London-based Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos. The Hollywood Reporter declared it

Halle Berry Thinks It"s Funny Teen Prince Harry Had A Pic Of Her On His Wall

Image
In case you were wondering if members of the Royal family beat it, they absolutely do. And the proof is in the photos that have re-emerged this week of Prince Harry ‘s high school dorm room, thanks to the courageous journalists at the Daily Mail . The photo, taken at his alma mater, the prestigious (EXPENSIVE)  Eton College back in 2003, sees the Duke of Sussex smiling in a waistcoat and pinstriped trousers, sitting amongst all his prized possessions. You can see an ugly but probably incredibly expensive rug stuck to the wall behind him, upon which he has pinned pictures of babes in swimsuits – presumably straight out of FHM –  and a fully clothed Halle Berry . Image source: Getty Images / Tim Graham. We are not trying to say that teenage Prince Harry was cranking his royal hog to Halle Berry – except that is exactly what we are saying. And Berry knows it, joking about Haz’s royal thirst by referencing Missy Elliott ‘s ‘ Work It ‘: Ok #PrinceHarry , I see you! ???? #HalleBerryPosta

Eric"s Heroes: The man presiding over Archie McPhee"s theater of the absurd

Image
Behold the spectacle of Seattle"s Archie McPhee"s (KOMO Photo) SEATTLE -- The world"s largest rubber chicken, yodeling pickles and thousands of other delightfully bizarre toys and gifts. What in the world is going on behind the scenes at the Seattle institution known as "Archie McPhee"? Well, sheer lunacy and joy. A brain-storming session at the company is anything but ordinary. Something beautifully, brazenly bizarre... and, slightly confusing. "Slaw straw. I don"t know what it looks like, but a straw with a claw on it. Claw for your lawn. It"s a Claw-n ornament..." At one point, the idea of a "haunted pickle" is thrown out. "Just so we are clear, this a regular pickle, but it is inhabited by a ghost," one said. It"s a strange meeting. "They"re clam-flavored candy canes..." The man presiding over this theater of the absurd is Mark Pahlow, and the ideas that make it out of the brainstorming sessions en

Stupid media and the claim that women are better drivers than men

Image
There are the Stupid Media and the Smart Media.  Part of the job of the Smart Media (yours truly, among others), though it does get tiresome, is to debunk the stupidity of the Stupid Media.  Such two-brain-cell reportage was on full display Wednesday with a Sky News article titled "Women are better drivers than men, study finds." No, I won"t link to it and give the Stupid Media more traffic.  Its theme is simple: "[m]ale drivers seem to have more accidents than their female counterparts – costing insurers more money in claims pay-outs" (duh), as the subtitle explains it. This isn"t exactly a revelation.  But I suppose that with newbie news-readers coming online all the time, it"s always news to someone.  And bashing men is a fashionable way to grab headlines. But like so much disgorged by the Stupid Media – intersex wage-gap propaganda, for instance – the notion that this means that women are better drivers is bunk.  Yes, men get into more accident

Review: "Sexy Laundry" charming, ridiculously funny, jarringly realistic

Image
If there are adequate words to describe Michele Riml’s ‘Sexy Laundry’ they are as such: deeply sweet and charming, ridiculously funny, and jarringly realistic. The same words can be used to describe the Peterborough Players production as well with the added sentiment of adoration towards the whole production team who’ve done something visually delightful with the single setting of a hotel room, and towards the two actors who tell the story with abounding wit and adamant fervor. Bridget Beirne is Alice Lane, Tom Frey is her husband Henry Lane, and together they find themselves in an overpriced hotel room with the singular intention of reconnecting physically. Looking to repair several holes in their twenty-five year marriage and armed with a “Sex For Dummies” book, the pair discover more about each other than they knew before or ever wanted to know. Absurd fantasies arise and frustrations with work and with aging come out in this sweet slice of life, but tremendous love above everything

Louis CK"s Surprise Comedy Set Included "Disgusting" Rape Whistle Joke, Says Audience Member

Image
Louis C.K. made a surprise appearance on August 26 at New York’s Comedy Cellar , and two women who were in the audience for the comedian’s 15-minute set told Vulture it was deeply uncomfortable. The women, one of whom asked to be identified with the initials S.B. and the other who wished to remain anonymous, said it was clear several female audience members were not happy when C.K. took to the Cellar stage unannounced. The performance was C.K.’s first since admitting to sexual misconduct last fall. “It felt like he was being thrust upon the audience without telling them,” the anonymous woman told Vulture. “The audience was very loud when Louis C.K. walked in. They were clearly supportive and surprised when he showed up, but there were a number of women sitting in the front row.” Read More: Michael Che Defends Louis C.K. Comeback, Says He Has the ‘Right to Make a Living’ After Admitting Sexual Misconduct “There were at least four to five females that I could see, and three or four o

The Thoughtful Pastor: Reading Genesis literally is generally a modern phenomenon

Image
+1  The Rev. Christy Thomas Dear Thoughtful Pastor : It seems to me that Christians have really worked themselves into a corner with the Adam and Eve myth. By reading it literally and positing that the serpent is Satan in disguise, their theology is built upon a premise that sin entered the world when Adam and Eve disobeyed God and ate from the forbidden fruit from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. But evolution and paleontology have proved, at least to my satisfaction and to the satisfaction of most educated people, that the Adam and Eve story is a myth, not a physical, historical fact. When you sit in church and the minister quotes from Genesis and says it is God’s word, implying it is literally true because it is stated as fact, you sit there and think you are being lied to. The minister can’t possibly believe what he is saying. That is a horrible feeling. You know the New Testament is founded on a belief that the stories in Genesis really happened,

This is the UK"s ideal garden – but do you think it"s a horticultural hit?

Image
They say Britain is a nation of gardeners – but we don’t necessarily agree on what makes the ideal garden. From artificial versus real grass to the proper use for a shed, debates rage backdoors up and down the nation. But what if the country were to compromise? Then, what would make it into the ultimate outdoor space? Well it’s funny you should ask, because the peeps at MyVoucherCodes have just conducted a survey of more than 2,000 Brits to find out. They’ve used the results to build up a CGI version of the ‘Great British Garden’… and here’s what it looks like. Topping of the list of features people wanted in their dream garden was ‘their own trees’, with 69 per cent of the vote. In joint second place was ‘grass floor rather than artificial grass’, with 68 per cent preferring not to fake it, and ‘stone walkways’. More generally, eight out of 10 people asked said they’d like their garden to be filled with wildlife. To help with this, the ideal garden includes a bird feeder and a water
