Supercars: Why David Reynolds kept it conservative in his SuperNight 300 driver introduction

PERHAPS David Reynolds’ subdued entrance in Supercars’ spectacular driver introductions for its return to night racing at the Sydney SuperNight 300 was no surprise.

After all, how do you top doing a shoey, throwing a pot plant off a podium, or whacking your co-driver in the nads with the Armor All mascot’s hammer?

“They all wanted me to do something stupid,” he told the FOX Motorsport Supercars Podcast.

“It was very different — a lot different than what we’re used to doing.

“I had no idea what it was and what we were doing (in advance), and I can’t plan for things, it has to be spur of the moment.

“I wanted to roll out there naked, but they said ‘don’t’, and that ruined all my ideas!”

Given the key role the Red Rooster Grid Kids played in the theatrics, it was for the best.

Reynolds’ conservative approach was mirrored by much of the field.

Sure, there were high points.

Rick Kelly rode out on a Honda monkey bike; Scott McLaughlin did the floss dance with his grid kid. Lee Holdsworth did the sprinkler.

Garth Tander walked out with his children Scarlett and Sebastian, while Scott Pye, Chaz Mostert and Todd Hazelwood also put their own twist on the smile-and-wave routine.

Although, given 300km of hard racing lay ahead, perhaps it’s no surprise that much of the field was a bit subdued.

“At the start of the race you’re not really concentrating on being a loose cannon,” Reynolds said.

“You’re concentrating on the race — and that’s when I become a little bit serious.”

IF YOU CHANGE YOUR MIND, WE’RE THE FIRST IN LINE DAVE

NASCAR are the masters of the driver introduction, and no NASCAR race does them better than the annual night race at Bristol.

Part of the flair is that the drivers pick their own walkout song.

When asked what Reynolds would choose, he said: “I’d have to go with something really, really s*** and left-of-field.

“Something like The Seekers or ABBA, something like that.”
